Because a destination is defined by far more than its accommodation, we would first like to introduce you to the remarkable region that surrounds it: an authentic, slower-paced Corsica, tucked away from the crowds and often overlooked on the way to the coast, yet rich in history, landscapes and genuine encounters.
Just twenty-five minutes from the Gulf of Saint-Florent, the scenery changes completely. Olive groves and the Corsican maquis surround centuries-old stone houses. Romanesque churches emerge around almost every bend in the road. Hilltop villages overlook the Nebbiu plain, backed by the mountains with the sea shimmering in the distance.
Here, exploring is not about ticking landmarks off a list. It is about wandering through narrow alleyways, following ancient mule tracks, sharing a platter of homemade charcuterie and stopping simply because the light is too beautiful to ignore. Rapale, our village
Rapale will be your starting point and quite possibly the place where you'll find yourself lingering far longer than you ever expected.
This is not a village to rush through. Its stone houses follow the natural contours of the hillside, narrow passageways and staircases wind gently between them, and around every corner new views open onto the surrounding landscape. Peaceful, authentic and wonderfully untouched, Rapale remains one of Nebbiu's best-kept secrets.
We recommend discovering it twice.
Once in the morning, as the first light gradually reveals the façades and quiet streets.
Then again in the evening, during the golden hour, when the warm light transforms the village into a photographer's dream.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The bell tower of Santa Maria Assunta rises above the village and serves as a landmark visible from almost every corner of Rapale.
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and deeply influenced by Pisan architecture, the church is well worth the short walk uphill. From its forecourt, sweeping views stretch across the rooftops of Rapale and the Nebbiu plain, making the climb more than worthwhile.
Inside, its beautifully vaulted and richly decorated interior recalls the construction of Rapale's new parish church during the seventeenth century, replacing the former Church of San Martinu.
The Rapalinca Fountain, Wash House .
The wash house : before running water, it was the true social center of the village.
Villagers gathered here to collect water, wash their clothes, above all, exchange news and stories. More than a practical meeting place, it was the social heart of the community and remains one of the most evocative places to understand everyday life in inland Corsica.
The Romanesque church of San Cesario
San Cesario from above: although the church has lost its roof, its striking checkerboard pattern of green serpentine and pale limestone remains beautifully preserved.
A peaceful country path leads from Santa Maria Assunta to San Cesario, gently leaving the village behind.
Built in the 12th century, the church is renowned for its remarkable polychrome masonry, alternating dark green serpentine with pale limestone. The same distinctive architectural style can be admired at the celebrated Church of San Michele in Murato, just ten minutes away, making San Cesario its natural sister church.
During his inspection of Corsica in 1839, Prosper Mérimée described it as "a curious church." It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1924.
The doorway, framed by alternating green serpentine and pale limestone, reflects the same distinctive craftsmanship found at San Michele in Murato.
More than its remarkable architecture, it is the silence surrounding San Cesario that leaves a lasting impression.
The walk itself is part of the experience, inviting you to slow down and leave the rhythm of the village behind.

The paths are uneven and can become slippery after rainfall.
Walking "between the profane and the sacred"
The trail begins on the edge of Rapale. A wooden sign points towards San Cesario, around twenty minutes away on foot, before continuing towards Pieve.
This heritage trail is undoubtedly one of the finest ways to discover the Nebbiu region.
Its name perfectly reflects the journey.
The secular world is revealed through ancient mule tracks, cultivated terraces, fountains, sheepfolds and dry-stone walls the everyday landscape that once shaped rural life.
The sacred unfolds through churches, chapels and small rural oratories scattered across the countryside.
As you walk, you quickly realise that Nebbiu's heritage extends far beyond its village centres. It lies hidden in the forests, along forgotten paths and within landscapes slowly reclaimed by nature.

The San Martinu chapel, the origin of our name
San Martinu at sunset. More than thirteen centuries later, its nave and apse still stand proudly.
Just a five-minute walk below the village, hidden among the Mediterranean vegetation, stands the ancient Chapel of San Martinu.
More than a simple ruin, it is an extraordinary witness to Corsica's history. Its nave remains standing, the apse is still vaulted, and the triumphal arch continues to rest on its original corbels. According to specialists, the chapel dates from the 7th to the 9th century, several centuries before the Pisan churches that would later become emblematic of the Nebbiu region.
We chose the name Domaine San Martinu because it already belonged here.
It is not a name created for marketing purposes, but a place deeply rooted in the history of Rapale, long before our project ever began.
This is why one of the very first walks we will invite you to take begins directly from the Domaine, following the ancient paths that lead quietly to the chapel, surrounded by nature and silence.
This remarkable site deserves the utmost respect.

I Fratelli Authentic Corsican Cuisine with a View
The terrace of I Fratelli overlooks the Nebbiu Valley, offering spectacular sunsets and panoramic views stretching all the way to the sea.
ILocated in the hamlet of Quercieta, I Fratelli is one of Rapale's best-known restaurants.
Its cuisine celebrates Corsican traditions while drawing inspiration from French, Italian and Mediterranean flavours. Local ingredients take centre stage: family-made charcuterie, Corsican veal, olive oil produced in Rapale, farmhouse cheeses and traditional canistrelli biscuits.
The menu features regional favourites including charcuterie, cheese fritters, veal dishes, homemade lasagne and cannelloni, Corsican cheeses, fiadone, and desserts prepared with Corsican chestnuts.
Perched on the hillside, the restaurant is as memorable for its breathtaking views as for its cuisine.

The pool, pizza, snacks and relaxation
For a more informal atmosphere, La Piscine is the village's favourite gathering place.

If we had just one day to introduce you to the village, this is how we would spend it.
Morning.
Begin with a leisurely stroll through Rapale's narrow streets.
Discover Santa Maria Assunta, the Rapalinca Fountain, then follow the path to San Cesario.
If time and energy allow, continue along part of the "Between the Sacred and the Secular" heritage trail towards the Chapel of San Martinu.
Lunch
Choose between two very different experiences.
Enjoy refined Corsican cuisine with panoramic views at I Fratelli, or opt for a relaxed pizza lunch on the terrace at La Piscine.

Take your time.

The balcony villages: Pieve, Sorio, Murato
Rapale is only the beginning. The villages of Nebbiu are perched like natural balconies along the mountainside, overlooking the plain while facing the sea in the distance. Just a few kilometres apart, they can be explored by road in minutes or on foot along ancient mule tracks, each revealing its own distinctive character and timeless charm.
Pieve
Pieve, suspended between the mountains and the plain, perfectly embodies the timeless charm of Nebbiu's balcony villages.
The village appears almost suspended between the surrounding hills and the plain below. Its beauty lies above all in its exceptional setting: panoramic viewpoints, traditional stone houses, dry-stone walls and quiet paths leading into the surrounding countryside.
Depending on the weather, the landscape is either crystal clear or veiled in the soft mist so characteristic of the Nebbiu region, from which it takes its name.
Leave your car at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
Allow around one hour to explore.
Sorio
Even more secluded than Rapale, Sorio offers a glimpse of a quieter, more intimate Corsica.
Surrounded by the fragrant Corsican maquis, rolling hills and farmland, the village seems almost untouched by time. Stone houses follow the natural contours of the hillside, while occasional openings reveal magnificent views across the valley and surrounding mountains.
Here too, there is no reason to hurry. Sorio reveals itself slowly, through its narrow alleyways, weathered façades and hidden gardens.
Allow between 45 minutes and one hour.
Murato & the Church of San Michel
Just ten minutes from Domaine San Martinu stands one of Corsica's most iconic Romanesque monuments: the Church of San Michele in Murato.
Built in the Pisan style, its remarkable checkerboard pattern of white limestone and dark green serpentine makes it one of the island's most photographed churches. Standing alone on a plateau just before the entrance to Murato, it is an unforgettable sight.
If you only have time to visit one historic monument during your stay, make it this one. Even more rewarding is discovering it after visiting its sister church, San Cesario, in Rapale.
Towards the Vineyards of Patrimonio
Descending from Rapale, the landscape gradually opens onto the Conca d'Oru the "Golden Valley" a fertile basin stretching towards the Gulf of Saint-Florent and home to Patrimonio, Corsica's oldest protected wine appellation.
Covering almost 400 hectares across seven communes, the vineyards produce the island's celebrated Niellucciu and Vermentinu grapes on limestone and schist soils.
Most wineries welcome visitors and offer tastings, while the road descending from Nebbiu is considered one of the most scenic drives in northern Corsica.
